Traditional Board Games

Egara Guti

Egara Guti is an Indian battle game. Each player has eleven pieces, the contending forces facing each other on the points of a lined board. Pieces move to adjacent connected points, and capture by jumping. The first player to capture all of the opponent's pieces wins the game.

History of Egara Guti

This game was first recorded in 1924, in the Central Provinces of India, but its actual age is uncertain. It is part of the alquerque family of games, first recorded in mediaeval times; another descendant of alquerque is draughts in all its various forms.

Rules for Egara Guti

Rules for Egara Guti
1. Egara guti is played by two people on the intersections, or points, of the board shown in the diagram. Pieces are set out in a symmetrical pattern, leaving just one point empty. Players decide at random who will make the first move.

2. In his turn a player will move a piece one step along a marked line, to an adjacent empty point.

3. A piece captures a neighbouring enemy piece by jumping over it to land on the empty point beyond. If a capture is available, it must be made.

4. Having captured an enemy, a piece must make a further jump and capture from its new location if possible. Any number of captures can be chained in this way.

5. The game is won by the player who captures all the opponent’s pieces.
